When Are Dental Implants Suitable?

Dental implants are a great option for anyone who has lost one or more teeth and lacks enough remaining structure to support a traditional denture. A dental implant serves as an artificial replacement for the tooth root. However, certain risk factors—such as poor oral hygiene, heavy smoking, blood clotting disorders, gum disease, low bone density, or severe diabetes—can influence the success of implants. Fortunately, advances in implantology have made it possible for clients with these conditions to safely receive implants.

Close cooperation with your dentist is essential. Following your doctor’s instructions, especially regarding daily oral hygiene, will help ensure your implant’s long-term success. With proper care, a dental implant can last a lifetime.

How Are Implants Inserted?

At your initial consultation, our implantologist will evaluate whether implants are the right solution for you. If suitable, the implant is placed during an outpatient procedure, with the client under conscious sedation or general anesthesia for maximum comfort. After careful preparation, the implant is positioned in the space of the missing tooth. At DENT MEDICO, we use high-quality OSSTEM implants.

Following implant placement, a healing abutment—a temporary insert—is placed to allow complete healing of the surrounding tissues. Antibiotics are prescribed immediately after the procedure to prevent infection. The healing process generally takes about 12 weeks, after which a permanent, fully functional prosthesis can be attached to the implant. During this period, you may wear a temporary dental prosthesis to make eating and social interactions more comfortable.
